Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet onions, such as vidalia
  • 2 tsp. worcestshire sauce
  • 2 tsp. butter
  • 2 beef boullion cubes halved
  • salt and pepper to taste optional

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice a little off the bottoms (just enough so they sit up straight). Use a corer or the pointed end of a peeler to core out an cavity about a 1/2 inch wide in the middle of each onion. Be careful not to cut through the bottoms.

  2. Fill each cavity with 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp. butter, and 1/2 boullion cube. Salt and pepper the tops if you like.

  3. Wrap each onion in heavy foil with the closing at the top.

  4. Place the onions on a preheated grill away from direct heat. Grill for 50 to 60 minutes or until they feel soft when lightly squeezed. That's it, enjoy with your favorite grilled entree.

Recipe Notes

If you like your onions with a little smokier flavor you can finish them on the grill without the foil, however you won't be able to save the au jus that was created in the foil.

Did You Know:  General Ulysses S. Grant, during American Civil War, sent a telegram. Addressed to the War Department, it read – “I will not move my army without onions”. The result was that three train cars loaded with onions were immediately shipped.  Onion is considered to have antiseptic properties and hence, it was heavily used during war times to heal wounds.
